Dr Makamba & kids 2JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – THE nomination for a worthwhile accolade is an endorsement of the role played by the Ibammo Foundation, a brainchild of prominent entrepreneur and philanthropist, Dr James Makamba, in empowering African youth.

Such nominations approve the organisation’s thrust towards assisting the youngsters, who are seen as bearing the biggest brunt of poverty so rampant in the continent.

Members of the public have nominated the foundation, which is based in Johannesburg, South Africa, in the Community of the Year Category for the Zimbabwe Achievers Awards-South Africa (ZAA-SA).

The initiative aims to celebrate the exceptional achievements of Zimbabweans living in neighbouring South Africa where they are making positive contributions in their adopted country and beyond.

Chief Executive of the ZAA-SA, Richard Moyo, recently outlined the objectives of the accolades.

“The awards are not just about outstanding Zimbabweans who have flown the country’s flag high in South Africa but are a celebration of the African migration story that has affected millions across the continent,” said Moyo.

This embodies the work Ibbamo Foundation, which is nominated alongside four other organisations.

Agnes Hove Chiweshe, the vice Chairperson of the Ibbamo Foundation said the organisation was both humbled and honoured by the nomination.

“The investment in the future of Africa’s youth is something we hold dear to our hearts. It is through recognition from organisations like the ZAA, that we hope to inspire others to get involved in the future development of our youth,” she said.

Makamba established the Ibammo Foundation in 2009, inspired by the historical presidential election of United States President Barack Obama and the particular role that quality education played in the Obama couple’s life.

Ibammo is an acronym for Inspired by Barack and Michelle Obama.

He was driven to establish a foundation to give young people access to quality education and build a strong foundation for their future.

The foundation inspires and empowers young learners between the ages of 14 and 18 years, providing a balanced framework for self-development that will increase their self-esteem and leadership capabilities as well as enhance their capacity to achieve in whatever context they find themselves.

Ahead of the awards event scheduled for Johannesburg, South Africa, the organisation’s Founder and Chairman, Makamba, hailed the nomination for the awards as a fitting recognition to its commitment to empowering youth in the fields of education and leadership development.

“The nomination is a realization that it is only through education that we can uplift our people, develop them and subsequently and develop our African countries,” he said in an exclusive interview with CAJ News in Johannesburg.

He was speaking ahead of a gala dinner to be held in November 7 in Johannesburg where influential Zimbabweans based in South Africa will be honoured.

A few months ago, the organisation helped rebuild a library at a school catering mostly for children from impoverished backgrounds in Soweto, south of Johannesburg.

Mokgome Senior Secondary School, built in 1959, has 900 children but up to 2000 pupils, including those from neighbouring schools are benefitting.

Makamba highlighted the importance of such investments in education and the youth.

“We have seen how in a single generation Asian countries such as Malaysia, South Korea and Singapore have conquered underdevelopment through massive investment in the education of their people,” he said.
