pedal stock theftDURBAN, (CAJ News) – SOUTH African police have arrested 80 suspects for stock theft in KwaZulu-Natal Province.

The livestock, numbering 395, livestock comprise cattle, goats, sheep and horses, which were recovered in the expansive rural areas around
Babanango, Bergville Ceza, Mondlo and Nongoma.

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, said the suspects were arrested following tip offs from members of the public.

Ngobeni said the operation was carried out between October 9 and 16.

Meanwhile 35 owners of stock were issued with fines for contravening the Animal Identification Act, which penalises lack of or improper marking on animals.

“We would like to reiterate to all stock owners to ensure that their livestock is properly marked as per Animal Identification Act, as this
will ensure a swift return to the original owners if stock is recovered,” Ngobeni said.

She said police would carry out routine checks in Babanango, Bergville Ceza, Mondlo and Nongoma to curb a recurrence of these crimes.
