Dignitaries confirmed for Africities Summit

ZumamugabeJOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) -JOHANNESBURG will be a hive of activity when it hosts African political heavyweights and captains of industry and commerce during the upcoming Africities Summit.

Host President, Jacob Zuma, and Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe are among dignitaries confirmed for the event.

African Union Chairperson, Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, as well as former Presidents, Thabo Mbeki (South Africa), Olusegun Obasanjo (Nigeria), Jakaya Kikwete (Tanzania) and Deputy President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, have also been confirmed for the event scheduled for November 29- December 3 in Johannesburg.

Over 5 000 delegates and international thought leaders from the African continent as well as across the globe are set to attend the historic summit to be held under the theme, Shaping the Future of Africa with the people- the contribution of African local authorities to agenda 2063 of the African Union.

Held every three years, this years’ seventh Africities Summit will encourage discussions among all stakeholders on the African Union’s 2063 vision, which aims ensure the socio-economic transformation and sustainable improvement of the living conditions of the people of Africa within the next 50 years.

Set for the Sandton Convention Centre, the summit will explore the local government vision for the next 50 years and creative ways of solving the problems facing cities on the continent.

Coinciding with harsh weather spells characterising most parts of the continent, above all, the summit will seek to develop a consolidated African position on urbanisation, climate change as well as human habitat in Africa.

The United Cities and Local Government of Africa (UCLG Africa), an organisation that represents and defends the global interests of local government on the African continent, is organising the Africities Summit.

Secretary General UCLG Africa, Jean-Pierre Elong Mbassi, will be among the dignitaries.
