Majuba sunninghill postJOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – THE construction of a key coal storage silo that collapsed at the Majuba Power Station, will be completed in two years time, Eskom said.

The facility disintegrated at the beginning of the month, which has curtailed the use of trucks to transport coal has been curtailed from an average 1 060 trucks a day to a current average of 90 trucks a day.

When the coal storage silo collapsed, it affected the coal supply of all six generating units at the power station.

Eskom said a short term solution was implemented with coal being fed through an elevated mobile boom feeder and the power station has been able to run at full load from February 2015.

An interim solution is currently in place and has been in operation from October 1.

It includes a newly constructed temporary conveyer belt to ferry the coal and is the reason behind the massive reduction in the number of trucks on the road.

Eskom said the designs for the permanent solutions had been completed and would include the re-instatement of the damaged silo and the associated coal conveyor system.

“The construction project is expected to be completed by the end of 2017,” the power utility stated on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Eskom assured the power system was currently stable with no load shedding anticipated.

“Eskom will continue to execute maintenance without load shedding throughout the summer period,” the company assured.
