COSATU demands probe into Cape town “segregation”

ct 3CAPE TOWN, (CAJ News) – THE Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) is considering reporting the City of Cape Town for allegedly implementing programmes that exclude the poor.

This follows the switching on of lights at a public place ahead of the festive season.

A music concert members of the public did not pay to attend was staged.

However, COSATU argued “the free concert was anything but free” as it is only accessible to those who have the money to get to pay for the public transport, to get to town to see the lights being switched on. The City then arranges free transport to get you home, given that they have already managed to exclude the really poor, by making the ability to buy a train ticket the criteria to get access to town to the concert.

“The poor gets nothing free from the City that is not prescribed in some law. Nationally, otherwise it is just a gimmick to deceive the really poor, who are excluded,” said COSATU Western Cape Spokesperson, Tony
Ehrenreich.

He said the mayor, Patricia de Lille, who was not reached for comment, must answer to this alleged discrimination that she subjected the people of the Cape Flats.

“COSATU will report this matter to the Public Protector (Thuli Madonsela) to get the City to stop giving freebies in a manner that excludes the poorest with a great con trick.”
