PRETORIA, (CAJ News – THE Democratic Alliance (DA), which has launched a vigorous campaign to encourage voters to register for the local government elections, has set its sights on wresting control in Pretoria and Johannesburg, two of the most significant cities in the country.

The launch of the voter registration exercise has set such plans in motion.

Among senior officials present at the launch were national party leader, Mmusi Maimane, Gauteng leader, John Moodley, and Pretoria mayoral candidate, Solly Msimanga.

“We are serious about winning. We want to win in City of Tshwane (Pretoria) and in the City of Johannesburg, because life changes for the better where the DA governs,” Maimane said.

He said his party was ready to challenge the ruling African National
Congress (ANC).

“Where the DA governs, there you find the lowest unemployment rate in the country and the greatest hope of finding a job.

“Where the DA governs, there you find a constantly improving education system yielding the highest matric pass rate in the country. Where the DA governs, there you find accountable, transparent governance achieving more clean audits than any other government in the county.”

He said under a DA government, South Africa would become a unified and non-racial society based on the values of freedom, fairness and opportunity.

“That is the dream Nelson Mandela fought for, and that is the dream the DA will continue to fight for,” Maimane added.

Pretoria, the country’s capital, and Johannesburg, the economic hub, are significant cities.

ANC is the dominant party in Pretoria with 118 seats to DA’s 82 (from a total of 210) from results of the last elections.

In Johannesburg, ANC leads DA by 153 to 90 seats out of a total of 260.

Both parties face stiff competition from the Economic Freedom Fighters in the forthcoming elections.

Meanwhile, Maimane said the exercise launched last Friday was the biggest registration effort the DA has ever mounted.

“The truth is we can win these local government elections before a single vote is cast on election day, if we register the tens of thousands of DA-supporting South Africans who have never registered to vote before,” claimed the opposition leader.

“Today we call on every single DA activist, member and voter in the country to help us register new voters,” said Maimane.

“We will run the biggest registration campaign in our party’s history – billboards will go up across the country, there will be hundreds of thousands of posters and more than 22 000 activists will take part in a comprehensive door-to-door campaign.”
