OLYMPIC-BOUNDPRETORIA-based athlete, Rutendo Nyahora, is basking in the glory of qualifying for the Rio Olympic Games.

The long distance runner is the first Zimbabwean woman to book a berth at the world’s biggest sports jamboree, capping what has been a fantastic few years for the 27-year-old.

The Nedbank Running Club-sponsored athlete has qualified for the Games after finishing the Vienna City Marathon in Austria on a high.

Nyahora crossed the line in 2:39.58 to finish ninth and book her place.

“I feel so happy to run and finish my first international marathon and being the first Zimbabwean lady to qualify for the Rio Olympics,” says the star athlete in an interview with Gauteng Guardian.

Nyahora, who is known as more of a 10km specialist, believes her exploits in Vienna have paved way for what she believes will be a significant year.

“It is going to be a great year for me especially being any Olympian,” the excited runner, who is indebted to her sponsors and manager, Nick Bester, says.

She has already secured numerous podium finishes this year, the most recent a silver in the Spar Ladies Race Cape Town Series held in the coastal city this past weekend.

Among the most notable performances as the clock ticks towards the Games scheduled for August in the Brazilian city has been the 21km McCarthy Toyota Race.

While she is excited about the opportunity to run among the best at the Olympics, she is coy about her chances.

“I am looking forward to a good run in Rio,” she says. – Guardian
