JOHANNESBURG – THE name Hillbrow is synonymous with high levels of population density, unemployment, poverty and crime, but will soon be associated with a platform that aims to empower the community.

Formed last year in March at the height of the xenophobic tensions, Hillbrow Radio’s growth have been phenomenal, hitting listenership figures of 1 million.

Peter Mbimala, Director of Marketing at Hillbrow Radio, is encouraged by the growth of the platform from humble beginnings since it started at the Ambassador Hotel.

“The response is massive,” he says.

“We have requested for frequency and we are for now only accessible through the internet,” adds Mbimala.

“ The Independent Communications of South Africa is aware of our progress, but does not have openings for frequency at the moment. We will stay online but if opportunity arises, we will go for FM.”

The online station operates corner of Van Deer Merwe and Claim Streets.

Some 54 volunteers serve the station, with a set of programmes that accommodate all ages.

“Our programing is educational, cultural , informative , entertainment and empowering,” says Mbimala.

“All our team members were there brothers and sisters who are all based at Mzansi. We are visible as community activists and active in the city of Joburg development structures.”

The station depends on advertisements for income.

“We are still looking for partners or sponsors moving forward. The public must know Hillbrow Radio is a place where there is a platform for all and we operate 24/7.

Everyone is welcome to add input or anything that is constructive,” Mbimala adds.

He is upbeat at the prospects of the station.

Despite the negativity around the Hillbrow, in the inner city, the place boasts such landmarks as the Hillbrow Tower, Ponte City and the Constitution Court. With its phenomenal growth, indications are the new station will soon be mentioned in the same breath as these iconic buildings.

“With over 70 percent of our listeners based in South Africa, Hillbrow Radio is a force to reckon with,” Mbimala says.
