GERMISTON- THE Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) has over the years been facing the challenge of deteriorating general aesthetics, a  rising rate of rodent infestation, unabated illegal dumping and environmental pollution.

Existing facilities and other infrastructure is being vandalized and there are unmaintained open spaces in this municipality which is one of the biggest in the country, with a population of over 3 million.

On the other hand, there is a high demand for improved service delivery  from members of communities. There is also high rate of ignorance on  environmental health issues from the community.

As an intervention, the municipality is embarking on the Clean  Nieghbourhood Friday campaigns aimed at encouraging communities to uphold  a culture of a clean environment by cleaning their respective areas every
last Friday of the month.

Executive Mayor, Mondli Gungubele will head a delegation of the city’s  senior officials together with key community stakeholders in eradicating  litter in informal settlements in the region.

The campaign emanates from the Clean City campaign launched in October  last year, under the auspices of “A Cleaner and Greener Ekurhuleni starts  with you.”

EMM spokesperson, Themba Gadebe, says the initiative motivates all stakeholders within EMM to take ownership of their environment by  contributing two hours of their time cleaning their surroundings.

Ekurhuleni citizens, businesses and stakeholders have been encouraged to participate.

“This will be an on-going event to ensure that all stakeholders participate in cleanliness programs and take ownership of their environment,” says Gadebe.

Gadebe says the main objective of the Mayoral Clean City Plan is to  achieve a Clean and Green Ekurhuleni.

Some of the visible achievements from the programme include creating  sustainable work and business opportunities for the youth through the  Youth Brigade programme.

More than 3500 “brigades” that have been appointed to clean the city.

“Some of the individuals will gain first-hand experience as they were  never employed before. This has increased the capacity of the municipality  to ensure that every ward within the metro is cleaned and kept clean by  the teams,” Gadebe says.

The official says the partnership with business community and residents in  EMM has been established to ensure the sustainability of the programme.

The initial Clean Neighbourhood Friday will this week target mainly  hostels in Benoni, Daveyton, Germiston, Katlehong, KwaThema, Tembisa,  Thokoza and Vosloorus.
