Johannesburg- THE Constitution Hill is commemorating 40 years of the Soweto Uprising.

Held in partnership with Kalashnikovv Gallery, the commemorations are held under the fourth Basha Uhuru Youth Festival, which will be celebrated throughout the month of June.

It features art exhibitions, film screenings sponsored by the Gauteng Film Commission, a creative network exchange, a time-travel tour which will re-enact the events of the June 16, 1976 from Orlando to Number Four as well as heritage cycling tour which will link up the Hector Pieterson Museum and Constitution Hill.

Number Four was once home to prisoners such as Mahatma Ghandi, Robert Sobukwe and the students of the 1976 Soweto uprising. Pieterson, age 13, was one the first students to be killed during the 1976 Student Uprising in Soweto. He has since become a symbol of youth resistance.

Meanwhile, Market @ The Fort, Constitution Hill’s monthly lifestyle market, will be a fusion of food, fashion, and accessories to complement the Basha Uhuru Music Concert on 25 June 2016.

Entrance for the whole festival is free.

The Soweto Uprising was a series of protests led by high school students in Soweto.

Students from numerous Sowetan schools took to the streets in response to the introduction of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction in local schools.

An estimated 20 000 students took part in the protests met with fierce police brutality.

The number of protesters killed is usually given as 176, with estimates of up to 700.

The country celebrates June 16 as Youth Day.
