JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – THE MTN Group has announced the appointment of Rob Shuter as the new Group President and Chief Executive Officer.

He will assume the positions following the resignation of Sifiso Dabengwa
late last year.

The mobile operator said Shuter would commence “as soon as it is practically possible in 2017 but not later than 1 July 2017” after the completion of his current contractual obligations.

Rob, a South African national, is the current CEO of the European Cluster at Vodafone Group.

He has previously held senior management roles at Vodacom Group, Standard Bank and Nedbank.

“I am honoured to have the opportunity and look forward to working with Phuthuma and the MTN Group board to ensure that we build on a strong foundation laid over the last 15 – 20 years for the Group to realise its full potential,” said Shuter.

Meanwhile, to enhance further the governance and depth of experience of the business operations, Godfrey Motsa has been appointed by the countries in the Southern African Region (excluding South Africa) to oversee the operations in those regions with effect from July 1.

He joins from rival Vodacom.

MTN also appointed new non-executive directors, namely Paul Hanratty, Stan Miller and Nkululeko Sowazi.

MTN also announced the appointment to the board of MTN South Africa, namely Mike Harper, Lerato Phalatse, Mike Bosman and Trudy Makhaya.

Acting chairman Phuthuma Nhleko will continue to provide the necessary leadership as non-executive chairman for the next two and a half years when he plans to step down.

Nhleko assumed the position of Executive Chairman in November 2015 to resolve the challenges sparked by a fine of over US5 billion for failure to register millions of subscribers in Nigeria and the subsequent resignation of Dabengwa.
