JOHANNESBURG – GOLD FIELDS has announced an employee at the South Deep mine in South Africa lost his life in a fall-of-ground accident on Saturday following a -1.5 magnitude seismic event.
South Deep management immediately suspended all destress mining activities and notified the Department of Mineral Resources. Due to ongoing seismic activity in the area, the in-loco inspection has been deferred until later today.
Nick Holland, Chief Executive Officer of Gold Fields, said: “Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased. Management will do everything possible to support them in this hour of need.”
“While this is the first fatality at South Deep since May 2015, our review will reassess all safety protocols, procedures and standards,” Holland added.
