JOHANNESBURG – THE Chief Executive Officer of South Africa’s Railway Safety Regulator (RSR), Nkululeko Poya, has denounced the escalating destruction of public facilities during strikes in the country.

Speaking ahead of the inaugural “Big Breakfast Interview on Public Transport Transformation”, organised by the African Press Association (APA) in Johannesburg, he advises aggrieved members of the public to channel their grievances through official channels.

“What some striking members of the public are doing, vandalizing infrastructure is of immense concern,” said Poya ahead of the event scheduled for the Protea Fire and Ice Hotel at Melrose Arch next Thursday.

Poya’s sentiments during the exclusive interview come on the back of workers in a number of sectors and students embarking on a wave of strikes leading to looting and vandalism.

Rail infrastructure has not been spared the upheavals.

Poya took out a swipe at commuters who vented out their frustration by destroying property.

“They must consider engaging in other means of communication.”

Poya will be one of the panelists at the “Big Breakfast Interview on Public Transport Transformation.”

“Operators should focus more on issues that will help transform technology and assist move the country forward and leapfrog as an economic powerhouse,” says the rail industry executive.

Poya is a seasoned speaker having participated as numerous national and international conferences, He regularly contributes to various professional journals, newspapers and magazines.

His natural appetite for learning, knowledge and improved organizational and rail safety performance motivates him to continuously seek innovative and impact-driven solutions in striving towards establishing rail as a safe, reliable, and preferable mode of public transport in South Africa and the Southern African Development Community.

In addition, he has managed to transform the RSR into an outward-focused and results-driven institution capable of meeting its regulatory targets and challenges.

Through his leadership, the rail sector has witnessed a year-on-year decrease in level-crossing occurrences as well as a gradual reduction in mainline derailments.
