JOHANNESBURG – THE tenth edition of the Nedbank Cup, one of Africa’s most iconic cup competitions, will kick off in the first weekend of March with more giant killing acts anticipated.
The tournament bankrolled by one of the country’s biggest financial institutions is South Africa’s premier cup competition.
It has been launched amid pomp and fanfare at the Nedbank Headquarters in Johannesburg.
Thulani Sibeko, Group Executive for Marketing, Communications and Corporate Affairs at Nedbank, says the 2017 Nedbank Cup celebrates a successful partnership with the Premier Soccer League (PSL), Sports Trust, football fans, our clients and communities.
“We hope that it demonstrates Nedbank’s purpose of using our financial expertise to do good for individuals, families, businesses and the communities,” says Sibeko.
The draw for the tournament dubbed Ke Yona (The One) was conducted in Johannesburg on Thursday.
Holders Supersport United have been paired with first division side Amazulu while last season’s beaten finalists Orlando Pirates where drawn against amateurs Eastern Cape Bees.
Mamelodi Sundowns, inaugural winners when Nedbank assumed sponsorship of the tournament, are also up against part-timers Mariveni United of Limpopo.
Venues and kickoff times will be announced in due course.
Premier Soccer League (PSL) acting Chief Executive, Mato Madlala, welcomes the continuation of the partnership with the financial institution.
“The last ten years have brought the PSL and Nedbank closer and we would like to believe that this has been a mutually benefiting relationship,” she says.
