JOHANNESBURG – A migrants group has lauded Minister of Home Affairs, Malusi Gigaba, for his intervention to curb the turmoil in a Johannesburg area where foreign nationals are accused of operating drug dens and brothels.
Foreigners, mostly Nigerians, are under fire, literally, with residents burning some properties said to be as bases by criminals burnt in recent weeks.
The African Diaspora Forum (ADF) has written Gigaba, expessing its appreciation for his intervention.
“ADF would like to thank you, for taking the lead in calming the volatile situation in our different communities after a very violent and turbulent weekend in Rosettenville. Your proactive action is praiseworthy and demonstrates firm and decisive leadership,” wrote ADF chairperson, Marc Gbaffou, on Tuesday.
The organisation, in reference to Johannesburg Mayor, Herman Mashaba, said the divisive approach used by certain leaders would worsen the situation.
“As ADF we expect clear, concrete and inclusive programmes from the newly elected Mayor of Johannesburg with regard to cleaning the city, providing decent and affordable accommodation to all and managing the informal sector in the inner city with a view to including the players in the private sector and hold them accountable.”
Thus, Gbaffou said AFD opposed and discourage the position of politicians who use “populist tactics” for their own personal interest.
“We encourage our community members to avoid stereotyping. Crime is crime and has no nationality. We call upon any migrant who might be involved in any criminal activity to renounce it forthwith and completely desist from it.”
The skirmishes in Rosettenville are the latest in series of xenophobic tensions in Gauteng, the epicentre of the deadly attacks in 2008, since Mashaba was quoted as saying foreigners were perpetrating crime.
