JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – MICHAEL Stephen has emerged the overall winner of the Sasol Global Touring Car (GTC) Championship.
Stephen scored 619 points compared to Gennaro Bonafede 508 points, and Hennie Groenewald’s points at a total of 262 points.
Speaking at the Sasol GTC Championship Inaugural Awards at Hyde Park, Johannesburg last night, Senior Vice President for Sasol Energy, Ed Cameron, said Stephen was announced the 2016 Champion through scoring in all races which determined the outcome of the championship.
“We are very proud to kick start this year with the Sasol GTC Inaugural Awards pre-season event that will set the tone of our 2017 journey,” said Christopher Kabosha, Senior Manager, Sasol Marketing and Public Affairs.
He said the Sasol GTC circuit racing offers Sasol a platform at which we demonstrate our innovative technology, research and development designs that enables Sasol to deliver premium products to the consumer market.”
The Championship, launched in 2016, is the new premier circuit racing category in South African motorsport and is endorsed by Motorsport South Africa (MSA). Sasol, who has been South Africa’s premier motorsport sponsor for over 50 years, is the naming rights sponsor, fuel supplier and broadcast sponsor of the new GTC Championship.
Stephen said receiving the 2016 Championship award for Sasol was humbling.
“I am proud of my achievements thus far and this award inspires me to continue supporting and upskilling the less privileged who have the talent to be the best in the motorsports industry,” Stephen added.
