CAPE TOWN – ESKOM, the South African power utility, has over the past decade invested R1,7 billion in skills development and job creation though its Contractor Academy.
Company executives disclosed the figures at the capping of 18 Western Cape Contractor Academy graduates in Cape Town on Friday.
After an eight-month training programme facilitated by Edupark, a non-profit company of the University of Limpopo, the beneficiaries were awarded certificates from the university at the event the institution’s Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof Joe Nel, attended.
“This is an indication that we are delivering on our promise to support ,skills development,” Eskom Western Cape General Manager, Alwie Lester, said at the ceremony.
The Contractor Academy was established in 2007 to support government in skills development, job creation and poverty alleviation.
The objective of the academy is to equip emerging contractors and suppliers (especially black women-owned and black youth-owned companies) with the entrepreneurial, legislative, management and leadership skills.
Acting Eskom Development Foundation, Cecil Ramonotsi, said more than 1 000 graduates had been certified since the initiation of the academy.
He disclosed a pass rate of 97,7 percent with a fair gender representation.
Ramonotsi said through the academy, the foundation was committed to empowering black women and youth-owned businesses.
Beneficiaries of the programme are emerging contractors and suppliers identified across the country.
“We are proud to be a shaper and supporter of their development,” Ramonotsi said.
