JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – GAUTENG have been crowned champions of the 2017 SAB Under 21 national championships.
The hosts defeated holders University Sports South Africa (USSA) 4 -1 on penalties following a 3-all draw in regulation time.
USSA were left to rue throwing away a 2-0 lead secured 15 minutes into the match at the Nike Centre in Soweto.The penalties proved a bridge too far for USSA as they relinquished their title.
This is the second title for Gauteng in their third final as they also won the 2012 edition and finished as runners-up in 2011.“The final was a great ending to a very exciting, action-packed tournament,” said SAB Under 21 coordinator, Kalashni Narainsamy.
Mpumalanga finished third after winning 1-0 the 3rd/4th place play-off match against Western Cape.
Furthermore, 32 of the over 250 players were selected into the SAB U21 National Championship team announced by coach Owen Da Gama.
