Advocate appointed to probe stadium tragedy

JOHANNESBURG – SOUTH Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) has appointed an advocate, Vincent Maleka, to investigate events leading to the death of two spectators at the recent Carling Cup fixture between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.
Scores were injured following a stampede at the match Chiefs eventually won 1-0 at FNB Stadium.
In a statement, PSL said the affected clubs, service providers, sponsors,supporters, the South African Police Service and all other role players would provide all possible assistance to enable Maleka perform the task.“The League will ensure that the matter is dealt with expeditiously and properly,” PSL stated.The league offered condolences to the families of the bereaved and a speedy recovery to the injured.“The League will not make any further comments on the matter until the investigation has been completed.”
The tragedy at FNB Stadium came 16 years after 43 fans were killed in a league fixture between Chiefs and Pirates at the Ellis Park.
They are the two most-supported teams in the Southern African country.
