CAPE TOWN, (CAJ News) – THE imposition of cadres from the ruling African National Congress to the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) board will worsen the problems at the beleaguered broadcaster, the opposition said.
The outcry comes at the nomination of Krish Naidoo and Febe Potgieter-Gqubule, who are said to be of “questionable connections” with the ANC.
“Cadre-deployment is at the heart of the SABC’s problems and has been the main reason for the disintegration of the public broadcaster,” said Democratic Alliance Shadow Minister of Communications.
She said by nominating the so-called cadres, ANC would have worked against the revival of the broadcaster.
The opposition’s outcry follows deliberations in the parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Communications.
Some 12 names have been forwarded to the National Assembly for approval to serve on the permanent SABC Board.
Among the names include veteran journalist Mathata Tsedu, Khanyisile Kweyama, Michael Markovitz, Nomvuyiso Batyi, Rachel Kalidass, Dikwanyane Mohuba, Bongumusa Makhathini, Victor Rambau, John Mattison, Naidoo and Potgieter-Gqubule.
Van Damme alleged during interviews, Potgieter-Gqubule revealed she might be running for a position in the ANC’s National Executive Committee while Naidoo is said to be an ANC legal adviser.
