Telkom Knockout (TKO)By AKANI CHAUKE
JOHANNESBURG – RECORD winners Kaizer Chiefs will be eager to end their trophy drought while league champions Bidvest Wits are keen to salvage their season when the sides meet in the semifinals of the Telkom Knockout (TKO) this weekend.
Kick-off is 15h30 at the Bidvest Stadium in Braamfontein on Sunday.
Perennial favourites Chiefs, the most successful side in domestic football, are desperate for a place in the final and a subsequent triumph in the decider having experienced two seasons without cup success.
It is a horrific spell by the team’s lofty stands, which is placing immense pressure on coach Steve Khompela.
Chiefs have been by far the most successful club in the tournament’s history, winning 13 finals but with their last success coming in 2010/11.
Meanwhile, Wits, winners in 1994, are experiencing a dreadful defence to their league title, putting coach Gavin Hunt and his players under strain.
With a tenth of the season gone, they are placed second-bottom in the 16-team table.
Chiefs and Wits head to the semifinal both troubled by injuries to key players.
High-riding Polokwane City will host Bloemfontein Celtic at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday.
Kickoff is 15h30.
Polokwane are enjoying their best run in the tournament but come against a side that has tasted success in the tournament before (2012/13).
Ironically, both sides were the winners at the Absa Premiership monthly recognition awards.
Polokwane forward, Rodney Ramagalela, won the both Goal of the Month (August/September) and Player of the Month (October).
Celtic coach, Veselin Jelusic, has been named the Coach of the Month (October).
