JOHANNESBURG – SOUTH Africans have been urged to spare a thought for households who are food insecure.
According to JAM International; a South African founded International non-governmental organisation (NGO) that focuses on providing effective nutrition says more than two million South African children are going to bed hungry every night.
The NGO intends to change this statistic through its nutritional feeding
programme that also encourages children to attend Early Childhood Development centres, setting them on their path of education.
‘ JAM SA currently feeds nutritious JAM porridge providing 75% of a child’s daily nutritional requirements to over 90 000 pre-school children ‘ reveals Peter Pretorius CEO of JAM SA.
The NGO assists early childhood development centres every school day. This is done with the help of donations from corporate and individual donors who we appreciated and celebrated at events such as annual Donor Appreciation event.
Prominent actor , presenter and model Christopher  Jaftha has urged other high profile personalities to utilities their popularity for the good of the cause .
Jaftha who likes to think of himself as a humanitarian/philanthropist is a brand ambassador for numerous goodwill organisations, including the SANBS (South African National Blood Service), JAM International .
He says he got acquainted the organization and its work through his mother .
‘ my mother always encouraged me to be a selfless and help the priviledged ‘ says Jaftha .
What started as a simple idea to partner with customers to tackle hunger, has become something extraordinary. KFC  add Hope has grown to support sustainable feeding programmes across South Africa.
JAM SA  is part of the 137 organisations that  provide 120 000 that benefits from R2 donations of their customers, combined with KFC contributions. To date , R400 million  has been raised since 2009, enabling children all over South Africa to learn, grow and thrive.
‘But, the truth is, there is still a long way to go. More than half of all South Africans live in poverty, with one in five children suffering from stunted growth and learning difficulties due to hunger and malnutrition. So, the situation remains critical. The more we can raise together, the more children we can help, creating a more positive future for all of us. says KFC Public Affairs Director for Africa, Thabisa Mkhwanazi,
JAM SA believes that in addition to nutrition, children need a healthy, safe and
stimulating environment that is conducive to learning. To achieve this JAM SA facilitates makeovers of day-care centres and provides educational toys, books, blankets, mattresses and playground equipment.
‘ In order to ensure that these makeovers make a real difference to the lives of children, JAM SA works with partners to provide training to the child-minders or caregivers, so that children are adequately stimulated and are well prepared for primary school.’ Adds Pretorius
Established in 1984 by Peter and Ann Pretorius, JAM International operates in Mozambique, South Sudan, Angola, Rwanda and South Africa. Since 1984 JAM has supplied over 1,64 billion meals and currently supplies a nutritious meal to more than 1,2 million people daily.
JAM also has programmes that focus on the provision of water, agricultural development, education, and infrastructure.
‘JAM South Africa’s programmes follow a holistic development approach that includes agricultural training, day care centre makeovers and Early Childhood Development (ECD) practitioner training all of which build on the foundation that its’ little Red Bowls of hope provide. R50 a month or R600 a year feeds a child.’  Adds Pretorius.
To date, the organisation has fed 1.2 million children all over Africa. Aside from their work in countries such as Mozambique, Angola, South Sudan and Rwanda, more locally, they have set up community centres in Randburg and neigbouring areas like Zandspruit, Diepsloot and Etzotseng .
