JOHANNESBURG – THE South African Communist Party (SACP) is set to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the death of its leader, Joe Slovo.

Commemorations are set for the Avalon Cemetery Heroes Acre in Soweto.

Party general secretary, Blade Nzimande will address the gathering, set to include alliance partners from the ruling African National Congress (ANC) and Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU).

“There will be messages of support from alliance partners and the Young Communist League of South Africa,” SACP Gauteng Provincial Secretary,
Jacob Mamabolo, said.

Slovo led SACP from 1984 to 1991.

He also served in the national executive and working committees of the ANC as well as the first Minister of Housing following South Africa’s first non-racial democratic general elections held in 1994.

The Lithuanian-born anti-apartheid activist died of cancer in 1995, aged 68.
