JOHANNESBURG – BELEAGURED South African consumers again exposed to low growth and high inflation have received a major boost after the Wireless Application Service Providers’ Association (WASPA) recommitted itself to another year of empowering cellular consumers.

WASPA is the self-regulating watchdog for South Africa’s mobile content and applications industry.

It was incepted in 2004, a decade after the Southern African country attained independence.

It was founded with the support of mobile network operators Cell C, MTN and Vodacom.

Although primarily a lobbying body for the over 400 firms who make mobile content and applications available to South Africa’s 35 million cellular users, WASPA is also hailed as a trusted consumer champion.

“After the mobile network operators, WASPA is today the most trusted port of call when it comes to helping consumers manage their content intake and subscriptions,” says Ilonka Badenhorst, WASPA General Manager.

He summarized some WASPA effective consumer protection mechanisms to include a world-leading Code of Conduct, annual election of office bearers and well-established formal complaints process among others.

“In conclusion, from a loose collection of like-minded firms wanting to offer increased choice to the mobile consumer, the WASP sector is today an important contributor to South Africa’s vibrant cellular industry and one that is assured of the full confidence of the mobile consumer.”
