KAMPALA, (CAJ News) – THE Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has congratulated Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) on becoming the first side from the country to qualify for the group stage of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League.

The Kasasiro Boys (Garbage collectors) beat Ethiopia’s Saint George 1-0 on aggregate to progress, alongside other sides from Botswana, Guinea, Swaziland and Togo to qualify for their maiden appearance at this stage of Africa’s prime club competition.

It was only their fourth appearance at the competition having been knocked out in the first round in 1998 and 2014. They bowed out at the second round in 2009.

Moses Magogo, FUFA President, said, “I am super excited.”

“It was all jubilation as KCCA qualified for the CAF Champions League group stages.”

He said the feat achieved at the Lugogo Stadium would enable the club’s fans, players, coaches and management gain continental experience which will rub off in the Uganda Premier League.

Magogo said KCCA’s qualification was a demonstration that there was no shortcut to achieving sports success.

KCCA, the 12-time domestic league winners, was founded in 1963.

They are first time qualifies alongside AS Togo, Horoya (Guinea), Mbabane Swallows (Swaziland) and Township Rollers of Botswana.

Qualified teams:
KCCA (Uganda), Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa), Difaa El Jadidi (Morocco), Zesco (Zambia), AS Togo (Togo), Etoile du Sahel (Tunisia), Esperance (Tunisia), ES Setif (Algeria), Primeiro de Agosto (Angola), TP Mazembe (DR Congo), Township Rollers (Botswana), Horoya (Guinea), MC Alger (Algeria), Al Ahly (Egypt), Wydad Casablanca (defending champions, Morocco), Mbabane Swallows (Swaziland)
