HARARE – MORE than 20 suspects arrested after recent demonstrations that rocked Zimbabwe during the announcement of election results are to appear in court on Monday after spending the weekend behind bars.

Harare magistrate, Nyasha Vhitorini, who earlier remanded the 21 suspected culprits, is set to hear their applications for bail when the court proceedings resume.

The suspects, who are represented by Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, were arrested at the offices of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) Alliance in Harare after the protests last Wednesday.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officers obtained a search warrant authorising them to search for weapons allegedly possessed by party leaders.

Their arrest followed skirmishes between protesters and security forces, which left at least six people dead.

Tension has gripped the Southern African country after the MDC Alliance rejected the outcome of elections announced by the under-fire Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC).

Elections were conducted in a peaceful manner with more than 5 million Zimbabweans casting their votes.

According to results released by ZEC, the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union- Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) won 145 seats to MDC Alliance’s 63 in the 210-member House of Assembly.

The National Patriotic Front, formed by sympathisers of toppled president, Robert Mugabe, and independent candidate, Themba Mliswa, each won a seat.

Emmerson Mnangagwa was declared winner of the presidential poll after securing more than 2,46 million votes to the over 2, 14 million votes clinched by MDC Alliance candidate, Nelson Chamisa.

Chamisa has declared himself the winner, claiming ZEC rigged the poll.

Relations between MDC Alliance and ZEC had been tense prior to the poll.
