NAIROBI – MORE than 1 000 tertiary students in Kenya have registered for a global competition run by Huawei, the leading information and communications technologies (ICT) solutions provider.

With the theme, “Connection. Glory. Future”, the Huawei 2018-2019 ICT competition aims to provide a platform for global ICT talents to compete and communicate, promote high-quality talent development, and drive the growth of a robust and sustainable talent ecosystem.

In Kenya, 1 121 students from 13 universities have registered in the second round which concluded in July.

Huawei aims to have around 3 000 ICT talents to be part of this programme, Suky Su, Training and Certification Manager of Huawei Kenya, said.

Su informed that the registration will continue until early September.

She encouraged more students to be involved.

“We are very proud to launch this project in Kenya,” Su said.

“This year and hope to make it into another flagship programme in the nurturing of ICT talents besides the Seeds for the Future program which is in its fifth year, and we strive to make the ICT competition an integral part of the local ICT ecosystem.”

The registration will be targeting University of Nairobi, Kenyatta University, Daystar University, Africa Nazarene University and Catholic University of Africa in the coming days.

The previous edition of Huawei ICT contest, held between 2016-2017, attracted 40 000 applicants from 800 universities in 32 countries globally.

The 2018-2019 version is expected to attract 50 000 contestants in 50 countries during the preliminary stage.
