JOHANNESBURG – SOUTH Africa is intensifying measures to ensure all its borders are impenetrable to rid of influx of illegal migrants.

South Africa shares its borders with four Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states comprising Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Botswana and Namibia while interior the country houses tiny nations Lesotho and Swaziland.

Zimbabwe has an estimated three million of its citizens in South Africa, who ran away from economic meltdown between 2000 and 2008 while other foreigners easily found their way to Mzansi.

The country’s main opposition – Democratic Alliance (DA) insists South Africa’s porous borders were attributed to the lack of tight security by its soldiers (South African Defence Force) and Home Affairs.

As such, DA insists new measures should be urgently put in place to tackle the influx of such illegal immigration, which locals believe is
contributing to huge unemployment (7 million unemployed locals).

DA’s aspiring Gauteng Premier Solly Msimanga Cllr together with party’s spokesperson on immigration Jacques Julius and Solly Malatsi MP were tasked to come up with concrete measures aimed at tackling illegal immigration.

Among other issues which the DA seeks to fix were the so-called
“dysfunctional Department of Home Affairs” which the opposition blames of corruption while SANDF is said to be not patrolling professional the borders.

“Under 24 years of ANC government; our borders are not secure, the SANDF does not have the human or technical resources it needs to patrol our borders and we have a shambolic Department of Home Affairs which is riddled with corruption and incapable of addressing the monumental challenges facing the country,” the DA said.

The huge influx of foreign nationals in the country has been squarely
blamed on mistrust and hostility between South African citizens and
migrant communities resulting in tension.

“Our plan will bring law and order and protect the interests of those who are in our country legally,” the DA spokesperson said.
