MOGADISHU – AT least 94 journalists and media staff were killed in work-related incidents during 2018.

Among those killed are 84 journalists, photographers and technicians who died in targeted killings, bomb attacks and cross fire incidents
worldwide.

Ten other media staff members who worked as drivers, protection officers and a sales assistant also lost their lives. Some six women were among the 94 victims.

The death toll marks an increase up from 82 killings recorded in 2017, according to the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ).

Afghanistan is the country with the highest numbers of media killings. At least 16 personnel were killed during the past year.

Somalia was the most hostile African country for media. No less than five professionals were killed.

According to the IFJ list for 2018, armed conflict and militant extremism account for most journalists’ killings.

Asia Pacific has the highest killing tally with 32, followed by the
Americas on 27 killings, the Middle East and Arab World recording 20. Africa comes fourth with eleven killings before Europe on four.

“These brazen acts of violence in utter disregard to human life have
brought to an abrupt end the short lived decrease in journalists’ killings recorded over the last three years,” said IFJ President, Philippe Leruth.

IFJ represents more than 600 000 journalists.
