JOHANNESBURG – MTN has been crowned as the Best Mobile Network in South Africa for the year 2020.

The accolade has been conferred at MyBroadband Awards.

To determine the best mobile network in South Africa, a “Network Quality Score” is calculated for each network using download speed, upload speed, and latency.

MTN reigned supreme in 2020 with a Network Quality Score of 9.86, followed by runner up in second position on 6.17.

MTN also had an average download speed of 52.84Mbps during 2020, building a big lead over the runner up in second position with an average of 29.39Mbps and third position with an average 21.58Mbps respectively, and outperformed its rivals in customer satisfaction.

In the final quarter of 2020, MTN also ranked as best network in the major cities of Tshwane, Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban.

“We are very pleased with the prestigious award received at the 2020 MyBroadband Awards,” said MTN SA Chief Technology and Information Officer, Giovanni Chiarelli.

“We are honoured as MTN to witness the continued growth in our network quality, and overall network performance. We have managed to constantly widen the gap between ourselves and our competitors to give our customers a superior experience.”

Chiarelli said MTN technicians and engineers had maintained the network experience and improved it despite huge shifting demands on data usage during the pandemic, along with load-shedding and the demands over the festive season.

“We will continue to put our customer’s first by maintaining the high standards we have set for ourselves,” he assured.

The annual MyBroadband Awards recognise excellence in the South African broadband and telecommunications industry.

Awards are based on customer feedback plus 1,2 million real-world speed tests performed by 41 000 MyBroadband Speed Test App users across South Africa between January 1 and December 31.
