JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – A banking application encouraging youngsters to embrace a culture of saving money has been awarded the grand prize at the second edition of the FNB codeFest 2.0.

The Kids Savings App by FNB Savings & Investments was the biggest winner at the event held under theme, Collaborate | Accelerate.

Held at the FNB Fairlands campus, more than 250 IT and business specialists across FNB, RMB, Wesbank, Ashburton and FirstRand took part in the 24 hour ‘hackathon’.

The brief was to to engage and prioritise internal IT assets that customers need access to on a daily basis.

The winning team’s innovation will allow children between the age of 7 – 13 to learn how to save in a fun, simple and interactive way.

FNB Business Chief Information Officer, Peter Alkema, said “codeFest 2.0 covered over 40 business ideas from across FirstRand with the ultimate aim of ensuring that we are first to market and impressively disrupt the banking technology sphere.

“We created this initiative to drive system innovation and to enhance the innovation ecosystem both internally and externally,” he said.

Meanwhile, despite already having arguably the best digital channels in South Africa, FNB continues looking for innovative ways to make banking even more compelling.

The bank has been instrumental in creating and developing game-changing technologies that have changed the way banking has been done.

“We need to ensure that we bring together multiple parts of a complex whole into a simple and convenient way.

“Our recent sponsorship at the South African Innovation Summit (SAIS) and wethinkcode has highlighted that FNB is committed to amplifying innovation at all levels in South Africa and globally,” said Alkema.
