Zimbabwe poll thumbs upfrom MARCUS MUSHONGA in Harare, Zimbabwe
HARARE – ZIMBABWEAN authorities have revived a crackdown on perceived opposition party supporters after a man was arrested for allegedly participating in protests by disgruntled citizens during polls last month.

Identified as Wellington Mariga, the latest suspected to be arrested has been charged with committing public violence.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officers alleged Mariga was among those that engaged in demonstrations that turned tragic in the capital Harare as the military opened live fire on some citizens dissatisfied with the handling of polls that President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) party eventually won.

Six people were shot dead.

Members of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) Alliance were accused of damaging property during the protests.

Harare Magistrate, Ruramai Chitumbura, has granted Mariga bail to the tune of $100 (about R1 500) and ordered the suspect to report weekly to the Harare Central Police Station.

More than 30 people, including legislator Tendai Biti, one of the MDC Alliance party leaders, have been charged with committing public violence during the contentious polls.

MDC Alliance claimed its president, Nelson Chamisa, won the polls but alleged the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) rigged the outcome in favour of Mnangagwa.

The Supreme Court, in a unanimous ruling, last month dismissed Chamisa’s challenge and officially declared Mnangagwa the winner.
