CAPE TOWN, (CAJ News) – ZIMBABWEAN nationals that successfully applied for permits in neighbouring South Africa have been urged to collect the documents as the process to regularise their stay draws to an end.

South African Home Affairs Minister, Malusi Gigaba, on Wednesday said more than 11 000 permits were still to be collected.

“When we reported to the nation back in August 2015, we said permits that still needed to be collected from VFS Global centres which were in the region of 26 986.

“The number has come down to 11 499,” Gigaba said as he briefed the media on the exercise to document Zimbabwean nationals.

Home Affairs appointed VFS Global to oversee the process to apply for the permits.

Gigaba said some 208 967 Zimbabwean applied for the permits.

A total of 197 790 Zimbabwe Special Permits were approved, with 160 applications still under review as a result of technical issues relating to the finalisation of applications, including the submission of incomplete applications, capturing biometrics and ensuring the required police clearances have been received.

Gigaba said 25 applications were rejected because their applications had no previous Dispensation of Zimbabweans Project (DZP) permits or had a negative police clearance.

He said the Zimbabwe Special Permit programme was drawing to a conclusion.

Permits are available for collection until January 31, after which VFS Global will return the all uncollected permits to Home Affairs.
