SundownsDURBAN, (CAJ News) – MAMELODI Sundowns are elated at breaking their cup finals hoodoo against rivals Kaizer Chiefs.

In front of a sell-out 53 357 crowd, the Pretoria-based team beat their Soweto counterparts 3-1 in an exciting Telkom Knockout final at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The fact that Sundowns went into the match carrying the underdogs tag, having lost all eight previous cup finals contested against Chiefs, made the result sweeter.

“I’m over the moon because we worked very hard to get here. The history has shown that Chiefs always dominated these big games, so we’re happy to end that final advantage they had over of us,” said The Brazilians’ captain, Thabo Nthethe.

Head coach, Pitso Mosimane, nonetheless conceded it was not one of their best performances.

“I think Sundowns didn’t play very well. Sundowns were very effective yes, but they didn’t play very well. They did the business and played to win the trophy,” Mosimane said.

Losing coach, Steve Kompela, concurred.

“I don’t think the result is a true reflection of the match. I strongly believe that on the night Kaizer Chiefs gave it away,” said Komphela.
