MTN Legal battleABUJA, (CAJ News) -‪ MTN Nigeria has reaffirmed its long-term commitment to its stakeholders amid legal challenges in the country.

It said despite these, it was committed to its 63 million customers, thousands of employees, vendors, partners and consultants.

According to the telecom giant, this commitment and belief in the long term sustainability of the business was one of the drivers of the company’s decision to seek judicial determination following its landmark fine by the Nigerian Communications Commission.

It said legal redress was in line with due process and the rule of law over the huge fine.
“The N780 billion fine has potentially dire consequences for the company, its employees, partners, stakeholders as well as the entire Nigerian telecommunications industry,” MTN Nigeria Human Resources and Corporate Services Executive, Amina Oyagbola, said.

The official said being a significant contributor in Nigeria, MTN also had an obligation to protect the interests of its ecosystem of millions of Nigerians who are directly and indirectly affected by its business operations and continuity.

Oyagbola added that the decision to seek judicial determination was reached after careful consideration of all factors including extensive attempts at a sustainable resolution.

“It is important to state that seeking judicial determination was a last resort. We hold the Nigerian Government, its national objectives, laws and regulations in the highest regard,” Oyagbola said.

He said the company would continue to engage with the authorities in an effort to reach an amicable resolution in the interest of all stakeholders.
