Joburg encourages safety during New Year celebrations

Fire worksJOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – THE City of Johannesburg has appealed to residents to celebrate the New Year responsibly.

Celebrations are scheduled to begin on Thursday culminating in pomp and fanfare at midnight when 2016 sets in.

“All residents are urged not to drink and drive and to celebrate the New Year in a safe and responsible way,” Thembelihle Radebe, Group Communication and Marketing at City of Joburg, said.

The appeal follows events of previous years when some revellers endangered the lives of other through violent celebrations.

Drinking and driving is also a major problem.

The City of Joburg meanwhile encouraged all pet owners to ensure that their pets were taken care of and urged all revellers to be mindful of animals and peoxple when using fireworks.

A number of events are lined up to celebrate the New Year.

At midnight, Soweto and Newtown will host a spectacular, massive and professional firework display at the free outdoor concerts.

“Residents are invited to come participate and enjoy the extravaganza,” said Radebe.
