SA commemorates worst sporting disaster SPORTS REPORTER
JOHANNESBURG – THE South African Premier Soccer League is commemorating the death of more than 40 fans that lost their lives during a stampede at the Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg 15 years ago.

The 43 fans perished on the evening of during a derby between local sides Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.

“The Premier Soccer League family and football family at large continues to mourn the tragic loss of life during that evening,” PSL stated on Monday.

“15 years later, we will never forget. The memories live on and we continue to honour the lives of those 43 brave souls.”

The Ellis Park disaster is the worst sporting accident in South African history.

On the day, there was already a 60 000 capacity crowd in the stadium, but reports suggest a further 30 000 fans were still trying to gain entry to the stadium.

Reports also suggest that 120 000 fans were admitted into the stadium.

Corruption among security personnel and ineffective policing were blamed.
