PRETORIA – THE multimillion-Rand Ga-Rankuwa Primary School has been officially opened in the Tshwane Region.

Gauteng Department of Education Member of the Executive Committee (MEC), Panyaza Lesufi, and the MEC for Infrastructure Development, Jacob Mamabolo, officially opened the facility, which cost R108 million and was completed on schedule and on budget.

The school has capacity of 1 200 children.

Although the school was opened today it will start operating from 2017 with Grade R until Grade 4 with 700 learners. Additional grades will be added from 2018 to 2020. The learners will be recruited from schools around the area.

The process of recruiting educators and the school principal will be concluded before the end for 2016.

This school is the first to be built in this area and will go a long way to relieve pressure in other surrounding schools.

It has 28 ICT-ready classrooms, laboratories, a library, connectivity and infrastructure network, alternative energy supply and sports facilities.

“The school design follows a new template for primary schools which among others include a Grade R or Early Childhood Development Centre; sports facilities; and ICT classrooms,” says Mamabolo.

Lesufi said the provision of schools with modern facilities in townships will go a long way to improve and transform the quality of education in the townships.

“It will also change the township economy,” said Lesufi.
