PRETORIA – THE newly-constituted Tshwane Council has elected Solly Msimanga as the Executive Mayor .

Msimanga, the Democratic Alliance (DA) candidate for the position in the recent local government elections, was the only nominee during an event by the newly-elected Speaker of the Tshwane council, DA councillor Rachel
Mathebe presided over on Friday.

There were loud cheers from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) benches when Msimanga was declared mayor. EFF had pledged to vote for the DA in the mayoral race.

Moments later, DA’s Christo van der Heever was elected the new chief whip of the Tshwane council.

The DA secured 43.15 percent of the vote ahead of incumbent African National Congress that polled 41,25 percent. DA secured 11,63 percent.

Msimanga succeeds Kgosientso Ramokgopa as mayor of the capital city.
