JOHANNESBURG – SOUTH Africa is mourning the death of legendary Kwaito musician, Mduduzi Edmund Tshabalala, popularly known as Mandoza.

He died on Sunday, aged 38, after a long battle with cancer.

President Jacob Zuma led the condolences.

Zuma said South Africa had lost one of its pioneers whose music appealed to a cross section of people, young and old, black and white.

“It is a great loss to the nation and we wish to extend our deepest condolences to his wife Mpho, his family and hordes of fans. Mandoza will be sorely missed. May his soul rest in peace,” said Zuma.

He is best known for his album Nkalakatha in 2000 which won multi-platinum status. The title track became a crossover hit and reached the top of the charts across all South African radio stations.

The Democratic Alliance extended its condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the acclaimed musician.

“His contribution to South African music will never be forgotten,” said Phumzile Van Damme, DA National Spokesperson.
