JOHANNESBURG – THE Confederation of African Football (CAF) has sanctioned some referees for inept match officiating during the recent
Federation of African Football Associations (FIFA) World Cup qualifiers.
Eritrea’s Berhe O’Michael (Libya vs Tunisia) has been suspended for questionable offside decisions including one denying a valid goal by
Libya.
He has been slapped with a three-month suspension, alongside Kenya’s David Ongonche, who has been hit with a similar sentence for wrong positioning
and movement, incorrect identification of fouls and failure to administer some disciplinary sanctions.
For missing multiple basic offside decisions which denied teams’ promising attacks in the same match, Rwanda’s Theogene Ndagijimana has gotten off with a warning.
Libya lost the match 0-1 at home.
The Ghana’s Joseph Odartei Lamptey (South Africa vs Senegal) has also been banned three months after awarding a wrong penalty for handball despite the fact that the ball never touched the hand of a Senegalese player.
South Africa won 2-1 at home with the error-prone referee escaping a beating by Senegalese players and officials.
He has however not escaped CAF’s long arm of the law. He is suspended for three months.
CAF classified the offences as poor officiating.
