JOHANNESBURG – THE Competition Commission of South Africa signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Administrative Council for Economic Defense of Brazil (CADE) to strengthen competition law enforcement between the countries.

The MoU by the two BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) countries has been signed in France on the sidelines of the 15th Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Global Forum on
Competition.

The MOU will boost bilateral relations on competition law and policy matters between the Commission and CADE, formalising an already-existing relationship of mutual cooperation and support.

The cooperation, which will remain in force for four years, will include coordinating enforcement activities, exchanging non-confidential information and technical cooperation among other objectives.

SA Competition Commissioner, Tembinkosi Bonakele, says there already is strong collaboration between the country and BRICS counterparts.

“This agreement reinforces our relationship with the Brazilian authorities. We will work together to intensify enforcement against global and cross-border anti-competitive conduct.”
