JOHANNESBURG – THE dismal performance of Polokwane teams in the country’s reserve football league is an indication of the dire state of development
structures in the Limpopo Province.
Baroka FC and neighbours Polokwane City are languishing at the bottom of the 16-team log, with the former rock bottom.
They are both without a win and to add to Baroka’s woes, they have not won any points after losing all their nine matches in the Multichoice Diski Challenge (MDC).
They have the worst defence, which has let in a massive 31 goals. Upfront, they have struggled for goals. They have found the net a mere three times, which averages a single goal every three matches.
Polokwane are equally struggling for goals. They have scored six but are generous at the back, letting in 15.
Miami Lodge director, David Mogale, recently summed up the province’s concern at the struggle by teams from the province.
The lodge recently signed a sponsorship deal with Baroka.
He pointed out teams from Limpopo are perennial relegation fighters with some having dropped to the lower rungs and others narrowly escaping in recent seasons.
“One of the ugliest stresses impacting on the growth of soccer is financial constraints,” noted Mogale.
Meanwhile, with almost a third into the season gone, Mamelodi Sundowns top the MDC with 22 points from nine matches.
