RUSTENBURG – ZIMBABWE’S football administrator, Philip Chiyangwa has been elected president of the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) President in elections contested at Sun City, North West province, South Africa on Saturday.

The property mogul is the current Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) president.

Chiyangwa is taking over the reigns from Suketu Patel of Mauritius, who elected not to stand after completing two terms in office.

Chiyangwa, who was supposed to lock horns with South African Football Association (SAFA) president Danny Jordaan, romped to victory when the South African football boss developed cold feet in the last minute paving way for the Zimbabwean.

An excited Chiyangwa expressed welcomed his appointment, arguing he turnaround the standard of football in the region.

He said was “happy and humbled”.

Chiyangwa will be deputised by Namibia’s Frans Mbidi while other members comprising Pedro Neto (Angola), Andrew Kamanga (Zambia), Sameer Sobha (Mauritius), Alberto Simanga (Mozambique) and Walter Nyamilandu-Manda (Malawi) have been elected board members.
