ADDIS ABABA – OUTGOING Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, has congratulated Cameroon after its senior men’s football team won the Africa Cup of Nations.
“Congratulations to the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon for a spectacular AFCON 2017 victory,” she said.
Dlamini-Zuma’s message came after Cameroon emerged victorious against their Egyptian counterparts, the Pharaohs of Egypt, in the AFCON 2017 finals which took place in Libreville, Gabon, on Sunday.
The final match finished 2-1 to hand the central Africans their first title in 15 years and fifth overall.
Dlamini-Zuma also commended Egypt for putting a good show in the final game of the tournament.
Burkina Faso beat Ghana 1-0to win the bronze medal in the third position.
The South African diplomat also commended the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for another well organized three-week long tournament.
She urged African citizens to continue supporting sport as it created unity and social cohesion.
“Sport events continue to unite the continent and embody Aspirations 2 and 5 of Agenda 2063, which speak to an integrated Africa with a strong cultural identity, common heritage, values and ethics,” Dlamini-Zuma said.
Cameroon will represent the continent at the FIFA Confederations Cup where they will join Australia, Chile, Germany, Mexico, New Zealand, Portugal and hosts Russia at the tournament, which runs from June 17 to July 2.
