JOHANNESBURG – MTN, the continent’s largest mobile network operator, has decried the wave of xenophobic violence in South Africa.
Nigerians have in recent weeks been targeted, with the government of the West African country this week reporting that 166 of its nationals have been killed in South Africa in the last two years.
“MTN Group expresses concern over the violence,” the South-African-headquartered firm stated in Johannesburg.
“MTN requests people to exercise restraint and remain calm,” the company appealed.
MTN is among several South African companies with a huge presence in Nigeria, Africa’s biggest economy.
Its Nigeria entity is the biggest, with some 60 million subscribers.
