March against xenophobia

JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – SOME human rights groups, civil society organisations, community leaders, political leaders and concerned South Africans are planning a march in Johannesburg to protest xenophobic violence and racism.

The solidarity march by the Coalition against Xenophobia is scheduled for Johannesburg on Tuesday.

The African Diaspora Forum (ADF) is organising the march that will start in Parktown and complete at the Library Gardens in the central business
district.

Marc Gbaffou, ADF Chairperson, called for solidarity against prejudice.

“The recent upsurge of violent attacks on foreign nationals can be overcome if we stand together,” he said ahead of the march.

It comes weeks after a recurrence of violence against foreign nationals, particularly Nigerians, in the Gauteng Province, which is the country’s
economic hub.

They are accused of running drug and prostitution schemes.

This has triggered a diplomatic storm between Nigeria and South Africa.

Nigeria claimed 116 of its citizens had been killed in xenophobic-related violence in the Southern African country over the past two years.
