JOHANNESBURG – MTN has disowned a Twitter account that gave an impression the mobile operator was insensitive reporter to an aggrieved customer.
A screenshot suggesting a woman complaining about failure to make calls despite having airtime, as well as depletion of data, with MTN reportedly responding, “Sad. It least you still have the land,” has been doing the rounds on social media platforms.
On Wednesday, MTN South Africa’s Services Executive, Graham De Vries, dismissed this as a parody social media account that masquerades as an official MTN twitter account.
“The reported response from this account to an MTN customer, which MTN regards as insensitive was not sanctioned by MTN,” said De Vries.
“We urge our customers to disregard this Twitter handle as it is not an official MTN Twitter handle but a parody account that was opened and shut down in 2016.”
De Vries said approximately six parody accounts purporting to be MTN Twitter handles had been opened since 2013.
Twitter has suspended some of these accounts while others became inactive after being discovered, De Vries said.
