JOHANNESBURG – LIMPOPO Premier Soccer League outfit, Baroka FC, is commemorating a decade of existence coinciding with the Women’s Day celebration.
Speaking ahead of the celebrations at Ga-Mphahlele near Polokwane, club spokesperson, Jimmy Ngobeni, expressed gratitude to supporters that have been with the club during its days as a high-flying lower league side and narrowly surviving relegation after a maiden season in the elite league.
“The the club felt it necessary to have the occasion to thank our supporters for the loyal support they gave us these past ten years,” Ngobeni said.
Baroka were to use the Women’s Day commemorations, held yearly on August 9, to showcase its twelve new signings and a “hit” they have over the past few weeks pledged to unveil to the public.
Thus far, veteran midfielder David Mathebula (34) has been their marquee signing.
They have also secured the services of Gift Motupa from Orlando Pirates.
Another major signing is Zambian forward Lewis Macha and his Zimbabwean counterpart Talent Chawapiwa.
Baroka rose to prominence in 2011 by reaching the semi-final of the Nedbank Cup, defeating several topflight sides like Moroka Swallows and Kaizer Chiefs along the way.
They also managed to win the 2010–11 Vodacom League Limpopo division.
The side eventually gained promotion to the first division and ultimately the top league ahead of the 2016/17 season.
Their campaign last season however was marred by coaching reshuffles as they finished second-last in the 16-team league.
Baroka retained their status after winning the unfashionable three-team playoff alongside fellow Limpopo side Black Leopards and Stellenbosch FC .
