CAPE TOWN – THE country’s main opposition, Democratic Alliance (DA), has called for the dismissal of South African Airways (SAA) board chairperson, Dudu Myeni.
The party has written to Finance Minister, Malusi Gigaba, demanding the dismissal of the beleaguered executive following myriad of problems at the airliner.
Shadow Deputy Minister of Finance, Alf Lees, cited the current financial crisis.
SAA desperately requires a whopping R10 billion bailout in order to enhance operations.
The company is believed to be operating only nine aircraft out of 60. A majority are reportedly leased at a cost of R3,5 billion annually.
Lees said despite the evidence of Myeni’s alleged incompetence and problems at the airline National Treasury had reportedly asked Myeni to remain in her position until the Annual General Meeting set for November.
“This extension of Myeni’s office term contradicts reassurances Gigaba gave that Myeni would not remain as the SAA Board Chair,” Lees said in a statement on Friday.
The DA has called Myeni President Jacob Zuma’s “close friend.”
She is the chairwoman of the president’s foundation.
